5G base stations are primarily composed of antennas, radio frequency (RF) units, and baseband processing units (BBU). According to operator statistics, lightning strikes most frequently damage power ports and RF ports on critical equipment such as RF units and BBUs. Data indicates that over 70% of base station outages result from lightning surges at power ports, followed by surges at antenna feeder ports and signal ports of monitoring systems.


In communication base stations, lightning protection for power systems is categorized into AC and DC protection. To effectively monitor surge protective devices (SPDs), lightning monitoring modules must be installed to track SPD operational status, grounding conditions, and lightning strike counts, enabling predictive maintenance of SPDs within the station. For antenna system protection, N-type RF surge arrestors (0-2.5GHz frequency range) are installed to safeguard RRU RF components. Critical installation guidelines require feeder cables to be grounded at three points: the antenna top, midpoint, and entry point before entering the equipment room.
